I Am Legend
Theme: biotech/genetics
I Am Legend is a powerful movie that focuses on the repercussions of tampering with biology, genetics, and things we generally shouldn't meddle in. Will Smith plays Robert Neville, one of the last people on the planet. The earth is overrun with zombies because of a cancer cure all shot that was distributed to nearly everyone. It was supposed to fully cure cancer, and it was supposed to prevent it from occurring. Scientists were so sure of this drug that they hardly conducted long term clinical trails and didn't think out the consequences. The drug didn't agree with most of the populations DNA, and humans turned into cannibalistic, mindless savages who hunted each other until there was only one person left in NYC, and a few scattered globally. People put too much trust in science, and do things that they shouldn't. A person shouldn't be allowed to meddle with diseases, life span, or fertility because it will most likely come back to bite you like in this movie. This movie reminds me of the Gardisil shot. It's a shot that's meant to prevent types of cancer in young women, however the company who made it once had a drug out that killed hundreds of people and there are not enough clinical trails to prove this safe either. If we keep trying to cure things, eventually our DNA will work against it and we will have a negative reaction or mutation towards it. This movie tells people to slow down. We can't control everything, and we can't play god and we shouldn't even try. I believe it tells us that the human society rushes things, and if we just wait something out we can prevent a zombie apocalypse and the end of the world.
