"Hamburg was heavily infested. They were in the streets, in the buildings, pouring out of Neuer Elbtunnel. We'd tried to blockade it with civilian vehicles, but they were squirming through any open space like bloated, bloody worms. Refugees were also all over. They'd come from as far away as Saxony, thinking they could escape by sea. The ships were long gone, port was a mess. We had over a thousand trapped at the Reynolds Aluminiumwerk and at least tripped that at the Eurokai terminal. No food, no clean water, just waiting to be rescued with the dead swarming outside, and I don't know how many infected inside. The harbor was choked with corpses, but the corpses were all still moving. We'd blast them into the harbor with antiriot water cannons, it saved ammo and it helped to keep the streets clear. It was a good idea until the pressure in the cannons died" (112)
This time, the narrator is a German native who's on a pilgrimage to Ireland for his Catholic wife. His interview is completely accidental and very insightful. He's just an outsider civilian who's witnessing what the Irish are doing to help protect their people. They tried blasting them, and refugee's are coming from all over the world to be saved only Ireland is no better off than any other country who's infested with zombies. They all have their different ways of dealing with this invasion, and no one has the cure all that will kill the zombies and get rid of them permanently. No one has figured out why it started, or how it spread and people want answers. There are riots and protests against the government because they're not telling them anything either. This portrayal of the future depicts the past as a place where people are moving faster than anyone predicted, and they can't deal with everything that comes their way as a consequence. Maybe if they slowed down, this could have been avoided.

"The Tulip"
"They tell me what happe ned here was not unusual, all around our world where the ocean meets land, people trying desperately to board whatever floated for a chance of survival at sea...I knew Alang was a shipyard, that's why I tried to make for it in the first place. I'd expected to find a construction site cranking out hull after hull to carry us all to safety. I had no idea it was just the opposite. Alang didn't build ships, it killed tThem...here were no dry docks, no slipways. Alang was not so much a yard as a long stretch of sand. Standard procedure was to ram the ships up onto the shore, stranding them like beached whales...The tulip literally split in two, the bow remaining on shore while the stern was pulled out to sea. There was nothin anyone could do, the Delmas was already at flank speed, dragging the tulips stern out into the deep water where it rolled over and sank within seconds. There must of been a thousand people aboard, packing every cabin and passageway and square inch of open deck space. Their cries were muffled by the thunder of escaping air" (70-71)
World War Z - Max Brooks
Biotechnology and genetics
The narrator in this section of the book is a white collar Indian man with a college degree and little knowledge of how to use his hands. He's scared and out of options. He didn't know where else to go so he tried the local shipyard because he assumed that people were leaving the country that way but in fact, it was the opposite. The shipyard was destroying all ships trying to leave and killing the thousands of people who were on board, hoping to escape the country and the infection. Boats were being beached, and destroyed. No one was permitted to leave the country. This was perhaps because the government didn't want the the infection spreading, or maybe they didn't want people to know that they were contaminated with the zombie apocalypse as well. They would rather kill their own people and destroy thousands of lives and not give anyone a chance for survival than look bad to the rest of the world, who is going through something very similar. This shows how petty humans are. They would rather die than ask for help. Humans are meant to make mistakes, we're not designed to be perfect however, when lives at at stake, most people won't rise to above and beyond the call of duty and do what they have to do to ensure survival for more than just themselves.

Greece
"The blood trail led up the mountain path from the massacre in the wadi. A lot of blood. Anyone who lost that much wouldn't be getting up again. Only some how he did. He hadn't been treated. There were no other track marks. From what we could tell,. this man had to run, bled, fallen face down- we still could see his bloody face mark imprinted in the sand. Somehow, without suffocating, without bleeding to death, he'd lain there for some time, then just gotten up again and started walking. These new tracks were very different from the old. They were slower, closer together. His right foot was dragging, clearly why he'd lost his shoe, and old, worn out Nike high top. The drag marks were sprinkled with fluid. Not blood, not human, but droplets of hard, black, crusted ooze that none of us recognized. We followed these and the drag marks to the entrance of the cave. There was no opening fire, no reception of any kind. We found the tunnel entrance unguarded and wide open. Immediately we began to see bodies, men killed by their own booby traps. They looked like they'd been trying...running...to get out." (19)
World War Z- Max Brooks
Biotechnology and genetics
Max Brooks takes on the view point of a Greek soldier because soldiers were probably the first to deal with this monsters. In Greece, they were almost unheard of until they saw the track marks in the dirt and followed it to the cave where there were lifeless bodies of soldiers everywhere. They were probably running to escape the undead in such a rush that they ended up being trapped into their own booby traps, or perhaps they fell into them on purpose because that was a far better fate than becoming a zombie themselves. This shows the fear and desperation of humans and how they're not invincible. They're breakable and the human race can't defeat everything no matter how hard they try.

"The Shetou"
"Before the outbreak started, overland smuggling was never popular. To arrange for the passports, the fake tour buses, the contacts and protection on the other side all took a lot of money. Back then, the only two lucrative routes were into Thailand or Myanmar. Where I used to live, in Kashi, the only option was into the ex-Soviet republics. No one wanted to go there, and this is why I wasn't initially a shetou. I was an importer: raw opium, uncut diamonds, girls, boys, whatever was valuable from those primitive excuses for countries. The outbreak changed all that. Suddenly we were besieged with offers, and not just from the liudong renkou, but almost as you say, from the people on the up and up. I had urban officials, private farmers, and even low level government officials. These were people who had a lot to lose. They didn't care where they were going, they just needed to get out." (12)
World War Z - Max Brooks
Biotechnology and genetics
Max Brook changes the narrator yet again to a Tibetan native. He also uses the local language to give it some authenticity. This point of view is that of a kind of scummy, low life "snake head" who smuggled in whatever he could and whatever could make the most money. After the zombie outbreak, he began to get business from officials and people who had more to lose than your standard citizen. People wanted and needed to get out before the outbreak got too bad to leave. They were just trying to take preventative measures. They only thought of themselves though. Government officials abandoned their posts, and forgot all about the people they were supposed to protect. This shows how selfish humans are, and how they only look out for themselves at all costs. They don't care about other people in a time of crisis, they just care about themselves and their own safety in a situation.

"Patient Zero"
"I found "Patient Zero" behind the locked door of an abandoned house across town. He was twelve years old. His wrists and feet were bound with plastic packing twine. Although he'd rubbed off the skin around his bonds, there was no blood. There was also no blood on his other wounds, not on the gouges on his legs or arms, or from the large dry gap where his right toe had been. He was writhing like an animal, a gag muffled his growls. At first the villagers tried to hold me back. They warned me not to touch him, that he was "cursed". I shrugged them off and reached for my mask and gloves. The boy's skin was as cold and gray as the cement on which he lay. I could find neither his heartbeat nor his pulse. His eyes were wild, wide and sunken back in their sockets. They remained locked on me like a predatory beast. Throughout the examination he was inexplicably hostile, reaching for me with his bound hands and snapping at me through his gag...I tried to take a blood sample and instead extracted only brown, viscous matter...I heard his left arm snap. Jagged ends of both radius and ulna stabbed through his gray flesh...the boy didn't cry out, didn't even seem to notice.."(7)
World War Z - Max Brooks
Biotechnology and genetics
Max Brooks uses another point of view, and a different narrator for this chapter to show how other countries dealt with the zombie outbreak. In this town in China, they thought that the people were cursed and contagious and didn't understand why they were acting so animalistic. They saw the tiny bite marks and couldn't figure out which animal they came from. They probably never even thought that they could be from a human or that any human disease could turn this violent this fast or be this degenerative. The disease completely changed the human body. There was no blood, no heart beat, no pulse and yet he was alive. They even accidentally snapped his arm in half and yet the boy didn't even notice. It's easy to think that he could be cursed or something like that because no one has ever had to deal with a human in this state and they're scared and desperate for answers. This entry shows that all of us are scared and don't know what to do in a time of crisis. We're all looking for answers and we don't know where to find them. But we're too stubborn to ask any other country for help because we don't want them to find us weak or have something against us. It shows how little humans know and how little they're willing to find answers out side of themselves.

"The Crisis"
"It goes by many names: "The Crisis," "The Dark Years," "The Walking Plague," as well as newer and more "hip" titles such as "World War Z" or "Z War One." I personally dislike the last moniker as it implies an inevitable "Z War Two." For me, it will always be "The Zombie War," and while many may protest the scientific accuracy of the word zombie, they will be hard-pressed to discover a more globally accepted term for the creatures that almost caused our extinction. Zombie remains a devastating word, unrivaled in its power to conjure up so many memories or emotions, and it is these memories, and emotions, that are the subject of this book....The official report was a collection of cold, hard data, an objective "after-action report" that would allow future generations to study the events of the apocalyptic decade without being influenced by "the human factor." But isn't the human factor what connects us so deeply to our past? Will future generations care as much for chronologies and casualty statistics as they would for the personal accounts of individuals not so different from themselves? By excluding the human factor, aren't we risking the kind of personal detachment from a history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn't the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as "the living dead"? (1-2)
World War Z - Max Brooks
Biotechnology and genetics
Max Brooks enlists a journalistic technique in writing this novel to give the reader a more personal, and intimate look into his portrayal of the future. By using first person, it gives us a closer, candid and less formalized look at the zombie apocalypse. Max Brooks shows peoples general lack of understanding of the situation. By giving the war silly nicknames, it shows that they don't grasp the seriousness of the situation or understand how devastating it is to millions of people. The narrator has a great point in the whole human detachment that was portrayed in an edited book that he wrote. As humans, we need to feel an attachment and some responsibility for something that we caused in the past because if we don't, then we are almost certain to recreate it and cause another crisis. People won't change their ways unless they feel an attachment to something awful that was completely their own fault. This depiction of the future reveals that humans in the present are careless and don't really think about the consequences of their actions or how what they do today greatly effects tomorrow.

Splice
Theme: Biotech & Genetics
Splice is a futuristic thriller about using human DNA. Scientists are essentially in an arms race to use human DNA before anyone else, and since the government would be all over them for cloning a human being because that is considered inhumane, they clone something similar to a human using human DNA without actually cloning a person. This thing grows faster than either scientist expected and is much stronger too. Because they're afraid for her, they hide her from the outside world, and the woman scientist becomes motherly towards it, while the man keeps trying to get ride of her. This creature ages fast, and they don't quite understand her. She becomes a danger and becomes murderous and angry. Ultimately, this movie teaches us that some things are not to be messed with because it's supposed to be up to nature to decide certain things, and this is one of them. We should not be cloning because of the repercussions that no one else seems to think about.
Metropolis
Theme: Inequality
Metropolis is a silent film, that in my opinion really started the whole futuristic movie movement. Many movies are based off of the themes and plots seen in this movie, and it's a classic. The future portrayed in this movie is that of a divided civilization. There are the thinkers, and then there are the workers. The thinkers are actual people, whereas the workers are robots creted with only one purpose in mind. The thinkers never cross over into the others world, and they are blissfully ignorant of how the other half lives. Some man decides to see how the workers live and is astonished and shocked as to what he sees. The working conditions are awful and people are being hurt and killed left and right but since they are just workers no one seems to care. They're not given the same rights as the thinkers and they aren't treated with any respect. The end of the world is here, and the town is being flooded and the only people being saved are the thinkers and the workers are kept in prisons and cages and left to die. There is rebellion and fighting and the workers will do anything to live. This movie reinforces the fact that humans generally don't respect or care about anything "beneath" them, and they will always put themselves first. Their general cruelty and disrespect will eventually lead to their downfall as a civilization.
Gamer
Theme: Government
Gamer is a high paced thriller in which the government uses and abuses their citizens. They justify this by saying that since they're death row inmates, they're destined to die regardless but that doesn't give them the right to make them fight basically to the death, and they aren't even in control of their own bodies at that. Some people try to escape, and others die on purpose. It takes a total of 30 games in order to be released and no one thus far has been able to do it. It's cruel, and a disgusting misuse of power on the governments part. These peoples lives aren't games or toys and it's unfair to give them false hope or they should at least be given the option to play or not. This movie shows a future where the government doesn't care about us, it only cares about themselves and they don't care about injustices because they aren't directly affected by it.
Idiocracy
Theme: Government & Technology
Idiocracy is a satirical comedy that pokes fun at the human civilizations increasingly dependent use of technology, and the stupidity that is our government. Your "Average Joe" is put into a time capsule and frozen and he's supposed to be waken up one year later. Because of funding and the governments negligence he was awaken five hundred years later and was awoken to a whole new world. People's reliance on technology had them not use their brains, and eventually people became stupid to the point that this average man was dubbed the smartest man in the world. He was able to escape from prison and outsmart nearly everyone and then he was hired by the president. The government wasn't able to protect their country and everything was rapidly dying because instead of watering plants with water, they kept using this sponsored soda. The people were lazy, stupid and over weight and generally didn't understand or care about what was going on around them. The justice system was corrupt and people did what they pleased. This movie shows us what can happen if we rely too much on technology; our brains will get weaker and weaker until intelligence is evolutionarily breed out. And our government will sit back and just let this happen and not even try to intervene or preserve the human brain, so it is essentially up to us to save ourselves.
The Seven Seals of God
The Seven Seals Prophecy
Theme: Religion
For years, people have predicted the end of the world and Jesus's second and even third coming. According to the Seven Seals Prophecy, as a result of a global crisis, everyone will be Satanic and everyone will have a satanic symbol on their hand and the Anti-Christ will rule the world for seven years, and that every Christian will be taken from this world by Jesus and go to heaven. They also talk about the seven plagues that will be descended upon us, "The following happen towards the end of the tribulation: 1. A severe sore comes upon people, with the mark of the Antichrist needed to buy or sell. 2. The sea becomes as blood and every living creature in the sea dies. 3. Rivers and springs become blood. 4. The sun scorches people. 5. There is darkness in the Antichrist's kingdom and people gnawed their tongues due to their pain. They blaspheme God and do not repent. 6. The Euphrates River dries up and paves a way for the kings of the east, which gather, along with others from the whole world, for the battle of Armageddon. 7. The greatest earthquake ever causes all the islands and mountains to disappear, and Jerusalem to be split into three parts. (Rev 16). " It sound awful, and it sounds unrealistic that the "creator" and "father" of everyone would want to do this to their own child, but for whatever reason this is the predicted way that the world will end. They foretell plagues, war and false proclamations. These prophecies seem ludicrous, and almost unreal. They say that the bible says that all of these things will happen, however it's open to interpretation. If the future is as bleak as this prophecy sounds, then the future is pointless. The anti-christ will rule and if you don't rebuke him, then you will mixed in with all of his chaos, but if you just so happen to choose what's behind door number two, Jesus will fly down from heaven and bring you back up so you can watch the rest of the world suffer I suppose.

The Happening
Theme: Environment
The Happening is a classic M. Night Shamalya movie with an interesting twist. People all over the country are committing suicide at abnormally increasing rates. People want answers and the government can't give it to them so there's anger, rioting and rebelling. People thought it was an air borne attack, and they were looking to place blame. They searched every where for an answer but never even considered that their world was doing this to them. The plants on planet Earth were releasing a deadly toxin that they all have, and it was driving the people to kill themselves. We abused the Earth and the plants for so long, they finally fought back. The plants were killing off the people and the environment was attacking us, and there was nothing humans in general could do about it. This movie teaches us about respect. People so often disrespect anyone and anything that aren't like them, and in so many futuristic movies we seal our own fate because of it.

Jurassic Park
Theme: Government
In Jurassic Park 3: The Lost World, the government tries their hardest to lie to the people and hide the lost world. Jurassic is referring to the Jurassic period of dinosaurs millions of years ago.In this movie, a family vacationing stumbles upon a baby dinosaur and the authorities are called. The family is brushed off by the government and sent off the island then the they began to panic because this world they worked so hard to hide was found by an eight year old girl playing on an island. Soon scientists and government officials move onto the quarantined island where everything is peaceful until the Tyrannosaurus Rex shows up and causes some chaos. People try to leave the island and they call for back up, but no one shows up so it's up to them to survive. This movie portrays a future where our government hides vital information from us. They don't care about our safety, but of their image and they will do anything to protect that. Whether it's Area 51, or the Lost Island our government will lie to us and hopefully it won't end world civilization.

Star Trek
Theme: Technology
Star Trek, whether it's the original movies. the remake or the T.V shows are all absolutely brilliant. Star Trek relies heavily on technology to save the world. The future here is portrayed as being helped by technology and humanity is saved because of it time and time again as opposed to many other movies that portray technology and human's hungry nature as being a bad thing but in Star Trek it's what protects us. The protagonist puts his life on the line to save the world more than once and he faces aliens time and time again. This shows us that technology isn't always a bad thing and there are people left in this world who are still good in their hearts. Everyone has the potential to be a hero.
Planet of the Apes
Theme: Inequality
Planet of the Ape's is a futuristic movie with a bit of a twist on it. Usually, when people make movies about the future there are aliens, nuclear warfare, or zombies but in Planet of the Ape's it's none of that. The back round of the story is that humans needed a subject to test an Alzheimer's drug on and selected apes. One monkey was chosen but was later killed but she left behind a baby, who became increasingly smarter. Since he was smart he saw how people treated monkeys and became increasing outraged until he did something about it. Flash forward a few decades and apes rule the world. They treat humans the way they were treated. Human's are prisoners on their own planet, and there's nothing they can do about it because the apes are smarter than them and are much stronger than they are. These humans are shot if they're caught out side of their cages and they're essentially slaves to the monkey race. They're treated unfairly, have no rights and are brutalized similar to the way humans used to treat them. These movie warns us about our superiority complex and our growing egos. It's telling us that there's nothing wrong with treating some other species with respect because at any moment evolution could flip the tables on us and we could be in a situation where we're powerless and abused and treated unequally.

I Am Legend
Theme: biotech/genetics
I Am Legend is a powerful movie that focuses on the repercussions of tampering with biology, genetics, and things we generally shouldn't meddle in. Will Smith plays Robert Neville, one of the last people on the planet. The earth is overrun with zombies because of a cancer cure all shot that was distributed to nearly everyone. It was supposed to fully cure cancer, and it was supposed to prevent it from occurring. Scientists were so sure of this drug that they hardly conducted long term clinical trails and didn't think out the consequences. The drug didn't agree with most of the populations DNA, and humans turned into cannibalistic, mindless savages who hunted each other until there was only one person left in NYC, and a few scattered globally. People put too much trust in science, and do things that they shouldn't. A person shouldn't be allowed to meddle with diseases, life span, or fertility because it will most likely come back to bite you like in this movie. This movie reminds me of the Gardisil shot. It's a shot that's meant to prevent types of cancer in young women, however the company who made it once had a drug out that killed hundreds of people and there are not enough clinical trails to prove this safe either. If we keep trying to cure things, eventually our DNA will work against it and we will have a negative reaction or mutation towards it. This movie tells people to slow down. We can't control everything, and we can't play god and we shouldn't even try. I believe it tells us that the human society rushes things, and if we just wait something out we can prevent a zombie apocalypse and the end of the world.

World War Z
“If your Soviet neighbor is trying to set fire to your house, you can't be worrying about the Arab down the block. If suddenly it's the Arab in your backyard , you can't be worrying about the People's Republic of China and if one day the ChiComs show up at your front door with an eviction notice in one hand and a Molotov cocktail in the other, then the last thing you're going do is look over his shoulder for a walking corpse.” ― Max Brooks, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
Theme: war
Max Brook's depiction of the future is like many others, revolves around a zombie apocalypse brought on by a virus of some sort due to human causes. In this quote, they focus on the war of the worlds aspect of the future. Nearly every country at this point in time is at war with one another, and they're so focused on each other they failed to be ready for the zombie attack. At first, the countries tried to keep the zombies a secret, then it started to get out. However, many countries thought it was a prank, or a joke at first until they were plagued with zombies too. He uses parallelism and repetition to get the point across that we were all too busy standing apart, and fighting each other to notice something so huge it could potentially destroy the human population, and cause an extinction of the human species. Brooks' tries to show the selfishness of the human race and their unwillingness to help each other out in a time of crisis, but in a larger scale. He tries to warn us about our fighting, and wars between countries and he's implying that it will never end, no matter what is going on around us, and even if humans as a whole are under attack.
